The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped outer window of the eye responsible for focusing incoming light. Corneal conditions, including structural dystrophies, corneal ectasias like keratoconus, inflammatory diseases, and trauma, can cause scarring or irregular curvature that distorts vision.

CORNEAL CONDITIONS

SYMPTOMS

  • Progressive Astigmatism: Frequently changing spectacle prescriptions or distortion that glasses cannot fully correct.

  • Light Sensitivity: Glare, halos around lights, or general photophobia.

  • Ocular Pain or Cloudiness: Persistent pain, redness, or visible haziness across the front of the eye.

DIAGNOSIS & SCREENING

Precise mapping is essential for managing corneal disease:

  • Pentacam (Scheimpflug Imaging): Non-contact 3D elevation tomography used to measure corneal thickness and analyse curvature patterns.

  • Pachymetry & Biomicroscopy: Assessing corneal endothelial cell integrity and anterior chamber structure.

TREATMENT & MANAGEMENT

Treatment is tailored to the specific corneal pathology:

  • Medical Management: Customised therapeutic drop regimens for corneal infections, inflammation, or surface disease.

  • Specialised Contact Lenses: Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) or scleral lenses to optical correct irregular corneal surfaces.

  • Surgical Interventions: Procedures tailored to correct structural scarring or advanced ectasias.
